Homestyle Midwifery is a Bay Area gem. The name says it all: We had all of the advantages of a home birth, commitment to natural childbirth, time spent getting to know us and our hopes for our birth, willingness to talk honestly and listen closely, and personalized attention they poured into our time together. They encouraged decision-making based on weighing sound information and our personal belief system rather than fear For the midwives of Homestyle, their job is an obvious passion—even though they’ve collectively attended hundreds of births, they treat each family with respect and each baby with awe. During visits I never felt rushed or that I asked too many questions. As my pregnancy went on, I grew more and more confident because of their trust in birth and their trust in me. Their enthusiasm was contagious! During my labor, I felt totally safe: I knew that they would honor my requests, never put me in a dangerous situation, and had the experience to deal with whatever arose. Because even though the labor was long, I was not pushed me toward unnecessary medical intervention. Instead, the midwives allowed the process happen naturally, honored my decisions, and left no detail unattended. Because of them, I’ll always look at my pregnancy and labor with joy, gratitude, and reverence.

The Homestyle Midwifery model is unique and extraordinary… Although we had not considered St. Luke’s in our initial search, our experience was very positive and we now feel a special connection to this hospital.

With my last babies I didn't even know what was happening , I just laid there with the epidural and the doctor would come in every once in a while and check on me. This time, with Homestyle Midwifery, it was hard work, but Hokhmah and Olivia gave me so much support and attention and encouragement. I felt so empowered! I really did, I felt so empowered!"

After having seen the Homestyle Midwifery midwives throughout my pregnancy, I entered my birth with calmness and complete trust. Their wisdom, experience and skill are a prized combination. Homestyle offers extensive experience in birthing, along with the personal attention and care that comes with a home-birth, all within the setting of a hospital. This combination is extremely compelling and much needed.

What was best about our experience was that Homestyle Midwifery midwives both provided our prenatal care and were with us at Saint Luke’s through the entire (12 hour) labor. They respected my wife’s input into her own childbirth, helping to create the right environment for our baby’s Mary’s arrival. The continuity of care provided a safe, comfortable and beautiful childbirth experience

As a newcomer to the USA and to San Francisco I had researched the SF area extensively. Finally after a long search I settled on Homestyle Midwifery and St Luke's (following a hospital visit in which I was deeply impressed by the up-to-date facilities, spacious rooms and super staff). I never looked back; this was by far the best option for anyone looking for a patient-centered practice which truly supports natural childbirth, yet offers the security and comfort of a hospital setting and full emergency back-up. I had a check-up with Dr. Norrell prior to delivery and found her practice to be extremely efficient, friendly and helpful, and felt totally safe delivering at St Luke's as a result. My birth experience was wonderful, and exactly what I so wanted it to be. Both my Homestyle midwives and the nurses at St Luke's were on hand throughout my labor and I felt constantly supported, respected and safe. I truly believe that I avoided the use of epidural and/or other interventions with the support of my 'team' and use of the laboring tub, which was a big priority. Most importantly to me, my beautiful son was delivered safely into a peaceful, intimate and calm environment, giving our new family a wonderful start together and making the process of recovery from labor and birth much easier than it would otherwise have been.

Homestyle Midwifery, combining a personalized midwifery service in a hospital setting, was the perfect combination for us and is the only option of its kind in the Bay Area .My laboring and birthing experience was the most beautiful, transformative experience of my life – all made possible by Homestyle Midwifery and St. Luke’s Hospital. My husband and I can’t wait to return with our next pregnancy.

I live in Marin but I decided to come and deliver in your hospital because what you have to offer is so unique. The help and support and follow up that you gave to my husband and myself is invaluable. I also want to mention the incredible kindness of your staff and the fact that they went out of their way to make sure that my family would be well taken care of.

I switched care at 32 weeks looking for a practice where natural childbirth would be supported, where I would know who would be attending the birth and where my caregiver would be with me throughout labor. St. Luke’s offered the unique combination of full hospital care and an environment where childbirth was considered a natural event. In my prenatal visits I had ample time for questions and full answers. The prenatal care treated my entire preparation for birth both physically and mentally. I was similarly impressed by my prenatal visit with Dr. Norrell, and her concern for how I was feeling through pregnancy. Before labor, the midwives, my husband and I discussed various ways the birth could unfold. Instead of drafting a defensive birth plan, we were able to work in concert with the hospital setting. We had a feeling of trust with the hospital staff that they were looking out for our health while allowing labor to progress naturally. We were given privacy when appropriate. We were not routinely offered drugs for a normally progressing labor. I was able to labor in a birthing tub, easing pain and allowing labor to progress quickly. After our son was born we were given time to bond before routine procedures. We were free to make requests about the birth, knowing that at all times our midwife and the entire staff had our health and safety in mind and that we would be counseled on the best medical practices as they related to birth We interacted with many outstanding staff members during labor and recovery at St Luke’s. In particular, Mary the lactation consultant got us off on the right foot for breastfeeding. While at St Luke’s we knew that if medical intervention were needed we would be well attended, however intervention would no be the primary course of action in a naturally progressing labor.
